OpenDrive as a SpiderOak Alternative
There are many cloud storage and backup providers available. So many in fact, that some may appear to be similar on the surface. There is a lot to consider when looking at two companies side by side. SpiderOak and OpenDrive appear to have a lot in common initially, but there are actually a great deal of differences. Today, we will investigate how OpenDrive is still the best with a side by side comparison of another company known for its security and privacy.
SpiderOak clearly boasts a “Zero Knowledge Privacy” guarantee on their site. What “zero knowledge” means is that even employees of the cloud storage company cannot see your files important information nor access them; not even if you tell them they can. OpenDrive holds the same policy. Their staff cannot alter, view, or edit your files. This gives you complete privacy even when dealing directly with them. OpenDrive takes security even further by offering a zero knowledge encryption folder called “Secure Files”, where uploaded files are encrypted with strong AES-256 encryption directly on your desktop. Your custom encryption key never leaves your computer and files are encrypted before they are sent to OpenDrive servers. Even if you forget your password, OpenDrive staff cannot see it to help you log in. They also have measures in place at their data centers to ensure total privacy and security. Everything is constantly monitored and access is restricted with an onsite security team keeping watch and monitoring everything from physical server rack access to network activity.
SpiderOak and OpenDrive share a lot of the same features when it comes to the ability to share and sync across multiple computers and devices. Both provide Mac, Windows, iOS and Android apps. However, SpiderOak does not offer WebDAV support. OpenDrive’s WebDAV offering lifts the restrictions of using only native apps and allows you to use various third party software and apps on mobile devices. You can do a great deal of things with WebDAV to make your cloud storage experience more flexible and convenient.
OpenDrive’s Sync and Backup Manager has all the features you could possibly need for backing up and managing your data in the cloud. Perhaps one of the best features is scheduled backups. You can fine tune your backup to be continuous, to run hourly, daily, or even at a specific time. Scheduling ensures that you aren’t using too much of your Internet bandwidth continuously and slowing everything else down that you need to do online. It also allows you to be in complete control of exactly when you want to send your files to the cloud by letting you upload different folders at different times. SpiderOak does not offer scheduled backups, but instead, runs continuously. Their software is not nearly as intuitive as OpenDrive’s and doesn’t allow for very much flexibility.
Pricing and plan options are another huge factor to take into consideration when looking at cloud services. OpenDrive offers Unlimited Business and Unlimited Personal plans for a very reasonable price. Their unlimited plans come with increased daily download bandwidth, and unlimited storage space, upload bandwidth and file size. SpiderOak does not offer unlimited plans. Their personal plans are sold as $10 per month for 100 GB increments. If you have a lot of data, 100 GB will not even come close to what you may need to put into the cloud, and could become quite costly. If you’re looking for a free option, OpenDrive’s basic plan stores up to 8GB of data while SpiderOak only stores 2GB.
For a small monthly price, your life can be simplified and made more secure with an OpenDrive subscription. You will never have to worry about extra costs incurred by going over your data limit or stress about not being able to customize your backup experience. OpenDrive is a much better alternative to SpiderOak in many ways.
