Researching Cloud Storage
Looking at a cloud storage provider’s features and prices are most likely how you make the determination on who to store your data with. While this is very important, there are more behind the scenes type things to look at. For instance, checking out a provider’s support desk and knowledge base could be one of those things you thank yourself for later. We all want to imagine that we will never be scratching our heads when using technology. But no matter your level of tech savvy, there will most likely be a moment when you need to reach out for help or guidance.
User guides can be an invaluable tool when first starting with a new product. Research providers and ask questions if necessary about their guides. Are they novice friendly? Do they offer step by step installation and setup information? Look through them to see if pictures and screenshots are included to help you through setup or common troubleshooting issues.
Perhaps one of the more important things to look at is the support desk hours. Make sure that they are open a reasonable amount of time during the week. Also check on what methods of contact they use. Is it strictly phone based or do they offer email or chat support as well? Ensure that you will be able to reach out at optimal support hours if need be and through a method that you are okay communicating with.
Most providers do not offer 24/7 support. So if you find yourself in a pinch during an off time, it is great to have reference material to look at. Research companies to make sure knowledge bases are available. These can be a huge lifesaver if you encounter an issue during a time that support is closed. Another valuable tool that some companies have are forums. You might have a good chance of running across someone who has posted already with a similar concern or issue or even finding a fellow user who can answer your question quickly. Forums are also a great way to find out tips or even about features you may have missed.
Company blogs are also often available. While these may be a mix of general cloud storage information and tutorial based posts, you may find exactly what you need there or at least be pointed in the right direction. They will also help you familiarize yourself with the product and you may learn tips or tricks that you were unaware of there as well.
No matter how easy a product is to use or how familiar you are with cloud technology, you will most likely need to turn to support type methods at least a few times in your relationship. Researching ease of contact and available methods in advance can end up saving you a headache or time loss later. Rather it be for support or tips, making sure a company has several methods of support ensures you get full use out of the cloud product you are paying for.
