OpenDrive as a MEGA Alternative
There is a vast sea of cloud storage providers available today, each focusing on its own particular set of features. Each company has its own mission as to what they want to provide to their customers. Some prefer to focus on making sharing files easier, while others focus on file storage. Some companies want to provide solid and consistent syncing and backups, while others focus on collaboration. With growing concerns about privacy, new providers are appearing with the mission of making your experience in the cloud as secure and private as possible. MEGA is one of these companies.
After the forced closure of Megaupload in 2012 due to copyright infringement charges, its founder relaunched it as MEGA in 2013 with a mission of keeping peoples files private from everyone, including government agencies. They developed and introduced a largely web-based application that is extremely simple to use yet extremely secure, focusing on file storage and sharing. Signup is free and they start you with 50GB of storage, which rivals other providers’ free account offerings. Since it is clear that this service is not intended to be used to back up your files and folders, the number seems to be set to accommodate sharing of larger files, such as videos, which once again puts them in shark infested waters when it comes to possible copyright infringement.
They seem to balance their treading of this fine line by implementing some of the best security features ever, allowing the user to set a custom, random key during registration that is accomplished by playing a block breaker game for a minute or two. The mouse movements necessary to keep the game alive are random and can never be duplicated. As a result, you end up with an adaptive algorithm that theoretically cannot be cracked. Their paid plans are also affordable, offering 500GB, 2TB and 4TB of storage for about $15, $25 and $40 respectively when converted to US Dollars.
Although this is an attractive package for people who want to share files with others, there is a lot lacking. MEGA’s package does not sync or back up your files and their apps for mobile devices are merely an extension of their web interface. They also do not offer unlimited storage or bandwidth in their plans, which limits your options even more. If you are just looking to share your files that are fewer in quantity and smaller in size, then MEGA is a worthy choice, especially if you want a free option. But if you want more than that, such as syncing, backup, collaboration, online file editing, company branding and unlimited storage, as well as much more, MEGA is severely lacking.
OpenDrive’s mission, however, is to provide file storage at an affordable price, by incorporating all possible means of storing your data, with all possible features, into one easy-to-use package. So what you get with OpenDrive is unlimited storage, company branding for business accounts, multiple user access, sync, backup, sharing, storage, collaboration and much, much more. you also get the top-notch security that rivals all other cloud storage providers, including MEGA.
