Is Pre-Installed Cloud Storage Worth It?
Cloud storage has certainly taken the world by storm. Our new devices usually come with some provider software installed and we are told how great they are upon setup. The truth is, however, that those providers may con you into purchasing a plan that isn’t right for you. You may never use the cloud for more than a place to back up your device or on the other end of the spectrum, may only need it to collaborate on files or share between all of your devices. Even though your new device comes pre-installed with software, it’s important to read details about a provider before making any kind of commitment. While that software may already be up and ready to go, the convenience factor could cause you issues in the long run.
Not all cloud providers are created equal. For example, you may be shocked to find huge differences in security alone. Always read over a company’s security standards and do research on all the methods they use. When dealing with private photos or documents, you don’t want to leave any bit to chance. Research both how files are transferred and the security at the data center themselves. Make sure their servers are monitored and antivirus and firewall programs are used.
The ability to backup files on your device is also important. Few providers offer you both a backup and sync option. Sync capabilities are definitely great and offer our generation an easy way to work and share. However, losing all of your important videos or music you purchased due to device failure or loss can be devastating and a huge inconvenience. Make sure the provider you choose offers both sync and backup features. You will also want to look into how easy it is to back up your device. Check to see if their software allows a way to regularly backup everything on a schedule rather than having to be initiated manually.
Another feature to check, is that this pre-installed providers have software or access capabilities across all of your devices. It will not do you much good if you can’t easily use the cloud on your tablet or phone even though you can on your computer.
One of the final items to check is pricing. You will be shocked to find what some providers charge for very basic cloud access. After you have narrowed down your search based on other factors, look at the costs for storage and extra features that you feel you may need. There are providers available who offer unlimited storage and all of their features for a set price while others may charge extra for each feature or if you go over your allotted space or file size. They may not present this on the front end and details be located in the fine print.
So, just because your device manufacturer recommends a specific provider, doesn’t mean that you or your device are obligated to use them let alone purchase a plan with them. Your data is far too important to you to take chances on security or lack of features just because a provider is already there. Your wallet will also be grateful for investigating pricing. Make sure the future you is pleased if you experience a loss with easy restoral of all of your files with a legitimate and safe provider.
